International Conference Biodiversity indicators for European Farming Systems, 21st and 22nd of June 2012 Lucerne / Engelberg

The diversity of habitats, species, crop varieties and livestock breeds is the basis of farming. At the same time, many wild species depend on European farmland. Indicators are needed to assess the status of farmland biodiversity in order to investigate the effect of farming systems and of agricultural policies.
The European BIOBIO research project has tested numerous biodiversity indicators on 237 farms in 15 case study regions across Europe and beyond. At the conference, methods for indicator measurement, results, guidelines and possible applications will be presented and discussed. Target audience are government officials and stakeholders from national and local administrations, representatives from NGO’s (farmers’ organisations, nature protection, etc), representatives from food industry and retailing.
