Eptesicus serotinus is an endangered species in Switzerland. In Canton Ticino it is considered as a bat of regional conservation concern. In order to develop a conservation action plan we investigated its roosting and habitat requirements in southern Switzerland. The foraging areas of 9 individuals were investigated by radiotracking and compared with available habitats.
Eptesicus serotinus was found to be highly dependent on vertical vegetation structures. It was foraging most frequently in natural or semi-natural open habitats as well as in semi-open or well structured broadleafed forests where the canopy forms a tunnel or a canyon. The individuals never used more anthropogenic habitats, unlike the situation commonly described for northern Europe.
A comparison of the microclimate in 12 roofs revealed a clear difference between a cover in tiles or stone slabs, the latter clearly preferred by Eptesicus serotinus in the southern part of Switzerland. The summer temperature measured underneath stone slab roofs is on average around 25°C, 2°C below the average value found under tiled roofs, mostly due to the absence of extremely high temperatures above 40°C.
