Biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in mountain areas of Europe: The challenge of interdisciplinary research.
Ioannina, Greece, 20-25 September 2005
Under the general theme of the conference, the scientific program will consist of Main Sessions, including Plenaries, and Poster Sessions.
Main sessions
1. Agricultural decline, land use and effects on biodiversity: The papers in this session will focus on the interaction of agricultural decline, land use changes and the impacts on biodiversity.
2. Biodiversity Conservation in mountain areas: This session will examine the relationships between biodiversity and human activities in mountain areas, the ecological and socio-economic drivers that shape mountain biodiversity and the need of conservation strategies for reconciling human activities with biodiversity priorities.
3. Developing Scenarios of Landscape Change – synergies from interdisciplinary ecological and socio-economic approaches. The goal of this session is to discuss various scenarios of landscape change that rely on different concepts (quantitative and qualitative) and approaches to identify and assess the potential extent and magnitude of landscape change. Policy- and management driven scenarios of landscape change allow integration of ecological and socio-economic considerations and spatial assessments of potential consequences.
4. Sustainable rural futures
5. Sustainability assessment, natural resources and strategic decisionmaking: The role of Sustainability Assessment has been that of providing a methodological support to identify leading sustainability objectives, understand the consequences of sustainability of the different development scenarios and assist with the engagement of stakeholders in the assessment process. The session will present key results achieved as well as views on the potential role of Sustainability Assessment particularly in an interdisciplinary working context.
