3rd International Conference on Biological Invasions
NEOBIOTA - From Ecology to Control
30. September – 1. October 2004, Zoological Institute, University of Bern
This is the third conference on biological invasions NEOBIOTA. In Bern we will discuss invasive alien species of all taxa (plants, animals, fungi) in a broad sense, with focus on ecology of neobiota, environmental, socio-economic and human health impacts, risk assessment, pathways and prevention, and control of neobiota.
The NEOBIOTA group includes all kinds of ecologists, as well as practitioners and stake-holders from environmental and nature conservation agencies and legislation and it considers all types of organisms and habitats (marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems) with a focus on Central Europe. Founded in spring 1999, the NEOBIOTA group concentrates on the environmental problems caused by the increased introduction and spread of alien species in Central Europe. In particular it aims to foster the information transfer between pure and applied scientists, political organizations and society to monitor the spread of invasive alien, species in Central Europe, and to coordinate research on biological invasions.
The last conference 2002 in Halle stressed the scientific challenges of biological invasions and focused on biogeographical processes, ecological and evolutionary interactions as well as challenges for conservation biology and socio-economics. The first conference on Neobiota was held in Berlin in 2000 and was initiated by the German Working Group on Biological Invasions NEOBIOTA. This meeting focused on the impacts of invasive species, individual case studies and the challenges to act.
