KOL/COL: Commission pour l'océanographie et la limnologie
In 2024, the COL successfully organized the first Swiss Lake Day, a networking event for the Swiss Ocean Community, which was attended by 135 participants.
The COL was also active both in Switzerland and internationnally (CIESM, SCOR), by attending events and providing feedbacks to documents and proposals.
Finally, the COL steering committee hold its annual meeting at Lake Cadagno and was hosted by the Alpine Biology Center Piora.

COL organised in 2024 the first Swiss Ocean Day, who took place at the University of Bern on June 20. The Oeschger Center for Climate change research offered support for the local organisation of the event. 135 participants attended the day, and appreciated the format, amongst which 35 students, and 41 NGO or stakeholders. We invited Laurent Bopp for a Keynote talk, and also Céline Preitner (FDFA) to present her work with the maritime strategy. Research group leaders were asked to present their activities in flash talks, as well as NGO and other stakeholders. It provided a good overview of “who does what” in relation to Ocean in Switzerland. ECR were offered the possibility to present their research in poster format.
Ms. Wohlfender from SERI attended the CIESM Congress in Palermo October 14-18 and represented Switzerland at the CIESM Board Meeting since no COL committee member was available to attend the congress. N. Dubois was on sabbatical in Australia at this time.
Prof. Laufkötter attended the SCOR meeting in Qingdao, on 16-18 October 2025.
On August 29-30, the COL held its annual meeting at Lake Cadagno. The Alpine Biology Center Piora (CBA) hosted us and presented us their buildings and equipments, in particular the platform which they will upgrade with the support of the Fonds Forel.
A) Prof. Laufkötter, Prof. Casacuberta and Prof. Dubois evaluated and ranked 8 working group proposals for SCOR.
B) Ms. Wohlfender from SERI attended the CIESM Board Meeting in Palermo, in October.
The COL has no funds for this. But students were encouraged to present a poster of their research at the first Swiss Ocean Day, and we included an early career researcher in the organisation committee: Dieter Baumgartner (ETHZ). 35 students attended the Swiss Ocean Day.
The COL set up a mailing list for interested people from the Ocean Community in Switzerland, through which we advertised the Swiss Ocean Day.

Prof. Jaccard and Prof. Frölicher (COL memebers) attended a meeting in September about "Swiss Maritime Strategy – Environmental aspects: Strengthening sustainability standards in the use of marine resources"
The COL also provided feedback on the "Rapport annuel de suivi de la stratégie maritime suisse" to Ms. Preitner.
The COL president attended a meeting with EDA-COL-SCNAT to discuss whether the COL should become active in the UNESCO - Commission Océanographique Intergouvernementale.
