Swiss Statistical Society SSS: Société suisse de statistique
Brig, 12 May 2025
Annual Report 2024
Dear members, partners, and supporting academies,
On behalf of the members of the committee, I would like to express my thanks for your support and commitment throughout the past year. Your dedication has played an important role in advancing the mission and goals of our society.
The Swiss Statistical Society aims to promote the application and advancement of statistics in Switzerland. We represent the interests of professionals in various domains including practice, research, and education, fostering connections among individuals working in the domain of official statistics or using statistics in business, research, and education. Additionally, we are committed to promote statistical literacy among individuals of all ages, from young children to adults.
As of December 31, 2024, the Swiss Statistical Society had a total of 429 members, including 15 collective members. Of these, 154 were enrolled in the "Business and Industry" section, 210 in the "Education and Research" section, and 181 in the "Official Statistics" section. (Note: members may belong to more than one section).
In collaboration with the Federal Statistical Office and Corstat, we organized the Swiss Statistics Meeting in Aarau, led by Marc Gindraux. The conference took place from September 4 to 5, 2024, focusing on society, data, and statistics. We were delighted to welcome 256 attendees, with a program with 5 keynote speakers and 14 workshops.
We updated the society’s ByLaws, and the revised version was approved at the General Assembly on September 4th 2024 during the Swiss Statistics meeting. Key changes include the introduction of a Newsletter, the definition of term limits for elected positions (e.g., a maximum of 6 consecutive years for the President), and clarifications regarding the election process and wording throughout the document. The updated version can be found here: https://osf.io/w9ad8/files/osfstorage.
Throughout 2024, we published one e-Newsletter. As this was our first edition, time was needed to set up the format, processes, and distribution. We aim to publish more frequently in the coming year.
In addition, we created a new webpage, now hosted under SCNAT (https://stat.ch), to improve visibility and access to information. We also launched an OSF page (https://osf.io/y7d3v/) to store and share important documents in an open and accessible way.
We developed a guide and workshop for Early Career Researchers in the empirical sciences, offering practical advice – particularly on methods and statistics – about what to consider when invited to peer review for a scientific journal. The guide is available here: https://rachelheyard.pages.uzh.ch/ecr-reviewers/ (interactive version) and here: https://osf.io/ubqyf (PDF version). The project was led by Rachel Heyard and Corinna Martarelli.
Our society holds membership in the Swiss Academy of Sciences and the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences. We are immensely grateful to these academies for their financial support.
On an international level, the Swiss Statistical Society is a member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), European Courses in Advanced Statistics (ECAS), and the Federation of European National Statistical Societies (FENStatS).
The current committee consists of:
Corinna Martarelli (President)
Rachel Heyard (Vice-President)
Daniel Kilchmann (Cashier)
Marc Gindraux
Antonietta Mira
Livio Lugano (President ad interim of the "Official Statistics" section)
Laurent Donzé (President of the "Education and Research" section)

We appreciate and value the contributions of all individuals involved in our different projects. Furthermore, we are grateful for the trust and support extended to the society’s committee.
Yours sincerely and on behalf of the society’s committee,
